    Sharm El-Sheikh

    Overview

Sharm El-Sheikh is a world-renowned resort city situated at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the desert sands meet the deep blue of the Red Sea. Originally a strategic port and fishing village, it rose to global prominence in the late 20th century as a premier center for international peace summits and high-end tourism. Today, it is celebrated as one of the world's top diving destinations, offering a unique blend of luxury hospitality, rugged mountain landscapes, and some of the most vibrant marine biodiversity found anywhere on earth.

    General Information & Facts

Strategic Location: It sits at the confluence of the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba, providing a vital gateway between Africa and Asia.

The City of Peace: Earned its nickname by hosting numerous international summits and peace conferences, recognized by UNESCO as one of the top "Cities of Peace" globally.

Marine Biodiversity: The region is home to over 1,000 species of fish and 250 different types of coral, making it a sanctuary for underwater life.

Safety & Security: Purpose-built for tourism, Sharm is widely considered one of the safest and most tourist-friendly destinations in Egypt with dedicated security infrastructure.

Modern Development: Unlike Egypt's ancient cities, Sharm is a "young" city, characterized by modern architecture, luxury five-star resorts, and world-class entertainment complexes.

    Tips

The "Two Sharms": Understand the layout—Naama Bay is the bustling heart for nightlife and walking, while Nabq Bay and Shark's Bay offer more secluded, all-inclusive luxury. Reef Protection: Many hotels have jetties to allow you to swim past the reef flat. Never walk on the coral, as it is extremely fragile and can cause painful cuts. Climate Caution: Summer (June–August) can reach 45°C (113°F). If you visit then, plan all outdoor activities for the early morning and stay hydrated. Taxi vs. Apps: Local blue-and-white taxis rarely use meters. It is often easier to use InDrive or Uber for transparent pricing, or agree on a fare before getting in. Dress Code: Beachwear is perfect for resorts, but when visiting the Old Market or Al-Sahaba Mosque, modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) is required. Bargaining: In the Old Market, bargaining is part of the experience. Aim for roughly 50% of the initial price and negotiate with a friendly, lighthearted attitude.
